A protagonist in the first novel in the series, Tamlin emerges as a complex figure in A Court of Wings and Ruin, serving as both an antagonist and a hero at different points. Formerly engaged to Feyre, Tamlin is profoundly affected by his experiences Under the Mountain. Witnessing the torment and torture of Feyre by Amarantha, he becomes highly protective of her when they return to the Spring Court, treating Feyre more like a prisoner than a lover and unwittingly turning her away from him. When Feyre flees to the Night Court, where she discovers that Rhysand, not Tamlin, is her true mate, Tamlin reacts with an irrational rage that reflects his possessive and controlling nature. In allying with the evil King of Hybern in order to restore Feyre to the Spring Court, he makes a decision with grave political and ethical implications. Feyre, in turn, spends much of her time in the Spring Court plotting against Tamlin, using his own explosive temper and feelings of insecurity to turn his people against him.

However, Tamlin is not a simple villain, despite his flaws. He surprises the others by appearing at the meeting of the High Lords, and while he does not conceal his feelings of hatred for Feyre and Rhysand, he nevertheless vows his support to their cause, revealing that he has been a double-agent working against Hybern. Feyre observes that his hatred for her is all the stronger because it is mixed with lingering feelings of love, and though Jurian warns Feyre that Tamlin is still working with Hybern, Tamlin shows his true allegiance when he rescues Feyre in the Hybern Camp despite immense risks. Tamlin’s love for Feyre, then, continues to burn despite his sharp feelings of betrayal and resentment.
