Sister of Nesta and Feyre, Elain is particularly affected by her transformation from a human into a faerie. While other humans might regard this transformation as a blessing, Elain was pushed into the Cauldron against her will, and she is deeply traumatized by the experience. Before her transformation, she was betrothed to marry Lord Graysen, a human lord. Throughout much of the novel, she nurses a desire to return to her old life and to marry Graysen, despite being a faerie. Elain’s story in this novel, then, centers upon her impossible desire to return to the past and her difficulty in adjusting to her new circumstances.

She makes a bit of progress in her recovery in Velaris, but this progress is swiftly undone when Graysen, who hates faeries, rejects her, severing her final connection to her human life and leaving her in an almost catatonic state. While other characters begin to worry that she has lost her senses, Azriel is the first to realize that she has been gifted the power of foresight by the Cauldron, and her seemingly cryptic statements are actually prophecies. For all her difficulties, she shares with her sisters a fierce loyalty to her family. In the final battle when the King of Hybern prepares to kill Nesta and Cassian, it is gentle Elain who, surprisingly, rises to the occasion, killing the King and saving her sister. Though her recovery is far from complete, her bravery in this battle attests to her hidden strength.
