The story’s narrative point of view is third-person limited. For the most part, readers follow Laura’s actions and are privy to only her thoughts and feelings. For example, when Laura goes to supervise the workmen putting up the marquee, the narrator says, “She loved having to arrange things; she always felt she could do it so much better than anybody else.” For comic effect, though, the narrator occasionally speaks to the reader ironically in an upper-class voice similar to Mrs. Sheridan’s voice. For example, when the cook suggests that Laura and Jose sneak a cream puff, the narrator says, “Oh, impossible. Fancy cream puffs so soon after breakfast. The very idea made one shudder.”
