Narrator’s Wife

The murder victim. Also a lover of animals, the narrator’s wife defends the second cat from her husband’s anger. She possesses the generosity that the narrator has mysteriously lost.

Pluto 

The narrator’s favorite pet, a large purely black cat. Pluto is the narrator’s favorite and most loyal companion until Pluto bites him in self-defense. Enraged, the narrator cuts out Pluto’s eye in revenge. Now terrified, Pluto avoids the narrator entirely, which leads to the narrator murdering him by hanging.

The Second Black Cat

A mysterious one-eyed black cat with a white spot on its chest who follows the narrator home from a bar. Although the narrator initially brings home the black cat to help with Pluto’s loss, the cat’s doting behavior only enrages him. Over time, its white spot transforms into the shape of a gallows, terrifying the narrator.
