Overview

Written in 1926, H.P. Lovecraft’s short story “The Call of Cthulhu” is a work of horror fiction which explores the terrifying unknowns of the universe. The story first appeared in the pulp fiction magazine Weird Tales in 1928, and since then, it has had a significant cultural impact, inspiring the creation of films, video games, and other works of art. “The Call of Cthulhu” also plays a key role in Lovecraft’s “Cthulhu Mythos,” a term coined by August Derleth that describes the appearance of similar characters and settings across Lovecraft’s body of work.
