The Narrator
A current inhabitant of the house. The narrator, whose name and gender are not given, forms half of a living couple now occupying the house. Although curious about what the ghosts seek, the narrator hears but does not see the ghostly couple that searches the house. Eventually, the narrator becomes aware that they seek memories of the love that the living couple now shares.

The Ghostly Couple
Earlier inhabitants of the house. The couple lived in the house hundreds of years before the events of the story. Once separated by the woman’s untimely death, the two are now reunited as ghosts. The ghostly couple searches the house together, looking for their lost treasure, trying not to disturb the house’s current inhabitants. The two discover that treasure time and time again in their memories of the past.
