Overview

“The Hill We Climb” is a poem written by Amanda Gorman for the occasion of Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration ceremony on January 20, 2021. Gorman’s televised reading of the poem received rapturous acclaim and helped rocket her to national fame. Following in the tradition of other inaugural poems, “The Hill We Climb” addresses the current social and political climate of the United States, though in somewhat abstracted terms. Rather than describing the current state of affairs in explicit terms, the poem articulates a vision of the United States as imperfect but still capable of improvement. However, progress will only be possible if Americans can bridge the divides that separate them.
