“Paul Revere’s Ride” is a narrative poem by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
. First published in the January 1861 issue of The Atlantic Monthly, the poem recounts the historic ride that Paul Revere took on the night of April 18, 1775. This ride has a legendary status in American history, since it helped spark the American Revolutionary War. This war, in turn, eventually led to the formation of the United States. Longfellow wrote the poem nearly a century later, when the U.S. was on the brink of the Civil War. At a time when the foundations of the United States were under threat, Longfellow sought to galvanize readers around a revolutionary figure whose very name symbolizes the fight for freedom.Read the free full text, a summary & analysis, an analysis of the speaker, and explanations of important quotes from “Paul Revere's Ride.”
