“I wandered lonely as a cloud” is a lyric poem written by the British Romantic poet William Wordsworth
. First composed in 1804, the poem recounts an experience Wordsworth had two years before while on a walk in England’s Lake District with his beloved sister Dorothy. As they approached the shore of a lake known as Ullswater, they witnessed a broad swath of daffodils dancing in the breeze. Wordsworth transformed this simple image into an enduring meditation on the natural world’s capacity to nourish the world-weary modern soul. To this day, “I wandered lonely as a cloud” remains one of Wordsworth’s best-loved poems.
