Mac, one of the three men to survive the plane crash, is a tail gunner who, despite some effort, falls prey to the harsh physical and mental conditions while adrift at sea. A later addition to the Super Man crew after the previous tail gunner is killed, Mac is a sergeant from Cleveland with a sweet tooth and a quiet disposition. After the crash, Mac panics during the first night on the raft and eats the entire stash of chocolate provisions. Though Louie and Phil do not turn against him for it, Mac is riddled with guilt and overcome by the fear of death during the rest of his time on the raft. Plagued by sinister silence alongside unpredictable outbursts of hysteria, Mac fights a losing battle from the moment they are stranded. Though he has small moments of victory, like helping Louie battle the sharks, he ultimately cannot overcome his greatest enemy: his own mind. Mac withers away on the raft, despite Louie and Phil’s attempts to include him in their mental and physical survival efforts. Mac’s presence is indicative of the deep internal war that soldiers face, and Louie looks back on his friend with honor and reverence, despite Mac’s tragic death.
