Kristin Hannah’s 2015 novel The Nightingale follows two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, through the German occupation of France during World War II. Inspired by true stories of female heroism, the novel explores the role of women in wartime, the long-lasting effects of violence and trauma, and the painful nature of memory.  The book was a #1 New York Times best-seller, and a film adaptation is currently in production.
