Overview

Published in book form in 1963, James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time is a nonfiction work that contains two epistolary essays, that were first published in 1962 as articles in The Progressive and The New Yorker magazines respectively. Both pieces describe Baldwin’s ideas on the state of race relations and the civil rights movement in the United States at the time and what he believes are the necessary steps to create unity and make America whole. The first, shorter essay is a letter to Baldwin’s nephew, while the second essay is addressed to no individual in particular. The Fire Next Time was a bestseller upon its initial release and has been celebrated as one of the seminal works of the civil rights movement. It’s influence on thinking about race relations continues to this day. The title of the book suggests that ruin and violence will ensue if the animosity between races does not cease.
