Overview

Lucky Jim, published in 1954, is a comedic novel by English writer Kingsley Amis that satirizes the academic world of post-war England. The protagonist, Jim Dixon, is an unwilling lecturer at a provincial university. As he navigates the absurdities of academia, as well as struggles with pretentious colleagues and a tumultuous love life, the novel humorously explores themes of social class, intellectual pretension, and personal authenticity. Amis satirizes the pretensions of post-war British society, academia, and the clash between traditional and modern values. Lucky Jim also contains what many observers believe to be the best—or at least the most vivid and colorful—description of a hangover ever published.
