The Lighting Thief, 2010
Director: Chris Columbus
Notable Cast: Logan Lerman, Alexandria Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson

Chris Columbus’s 2010 film was the first attempt to adapt The Lighting Thief. It received mixed reviews from both critics and fans for straying too far from the source material; the three main characters, for instance, were aged up significantly. However, the film did receive some praise for its special effects and action sequences, as well as Lerman’s performance. Famously, Riordan was frustrated with changes that had been made to the original story. In 2018, he published two emails on his blog that he had originally sent to the studio after he read the script. In the emails, he urged them to stick to the source material because he was worried fans would be disappointed. The same team made a film adaptation of the next book in the series, The Sea of Monsters, but the project was canceled soon after and further movies were scrapped.
