Overview

Published in 2024, James is a historical fiction novel by Percival Everett that reimagines the American classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, telling the story from the perspective of the enslaved Jim. The narrative follows Jim as he escapes and travels across the South at the dawn of the Civil War, desperately searching for a way to rescue his wife and daughter from the bonds of slavery. Between its moments of humor, heart, perseverance, and tragedy, James honors Twain’s original text while expanding its world and giving a powerful voice to one of its most famous characters. The book won the 2024 Kirkus Prize as well as the National Book Award for Fiction, and was a Booker Prize finalist.
