[Mom] doesn’t watch me dance the way she watches me act. Maybe it’s because she didn’t want to be a dancer growing up, she wanted to be an actress, and maybe Mom only sits in when I’m being the thing she wanted to be.

This quote is taken from Chapter 12, as Jennette reflects on why she likes her dance classes better than her acting classes. Secretly, she enjoys dancing more because Mom isn’t there watching her every move. Although still a child, Jennette knows full well that Mom is using her as a tool through which to experience the life Mom was deprived of when her own parents wouldn’t let her become an actor. Since Mom never wanted to be a dancer, she has no interest in watching the dance classes, and Jennette is free to be herself, safe from Mom’s aspirations and scrutiny.
