Stanley’s father, Mr. Yelnats, is an inventor with dogged perseverance. Mr. Yelnats believes that he has fallen victim to the family curse because he’s unlucky that his experiments and inventions never seem to work out. However, Mr. Yelnats has more in common with his great-grandfather, Elya, than simply the curse. Even though he’s a loving father, Mr. Yelnats demonstrates some of the slight selfishness we see in Elya. Mr. Yeltnats’s singular focus on his inventions puts Stanley’s family in jeopardy. For example, Mr. Yelnats, being solely an inventor, doesn’t contribute to the family’s finances, which is one of the reasons the Yelnats family is poor. Even worse, their landlord threatens to evict the family because of a terrible smell coming from his experiments with recycling old sneakers. The same perseverance that makes him a good inventor also threatens to hurt the people he cares about. However, Mr. Yelnats is not incurably selfish, and he cares deeply about his family. The minute he finds success, he contributes his resources to proving Stanley innocent.
