Theodore, or Armpit, as he prefers to be called, is one of X-Ray’s followers in Group D. Despite being the largest boy in the group, Armpit follows X-Ray’s lead, maintaining the social hierarchy. Indeed, X-Ray appears to adjust his behavior to defer to whichever person in the room has the most power. Theodore refuses to be called “Theodore,” presumably because X-Ray calls him Armpit. As Stanley quickly realizes, getting a nickname from X-Ray is a sign of acceptance from the group and a sign of the group’s protection. Armpit plays along with Mr. Pendanski’s caring persona by calling him “Mom,” which Mr. Pendanski seems to enjoy. When Stanley takes the blame for stealing Mr. Sir’s sunflower seeds, Armpit is the first to play along, happy to make sure he himself stays out of trouble. Even though Armpit seems tough, these behaviors suggest he’s deeply afraid. Much like the other boys in Group D, he hides his weaknesses under a tough persona. While this behavior keeps him safe socially at Camp Green Lake, he doesn’t appear to have a deep friendship with any of the other boys. Friendship, as Stanley and Zero demonstrate, requires being vulnerable.
