Overview

Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement is a collection of three interviews, six speeches, and an essay by the pioneering Black feminist, political activist, and intellectual Angela Y. Davis that was published in 2016. Davis argues for the importance of understanding that all fights for freedom, no matter where they occur, are integrally interconnected. An activist icon herself, Davis argues against putting faith in charismatic individuals, stressing instead that it is unknown people, often women, whose imagination and effort are instrumental to the ongoing struggle against oppression and hate. The book’s title, “Freedom Is a Constant Struggle,” is taken from a 1960s protest song. Both the song and Davis’s book stress that freedom is not the work of an instant or a single individual, requiring instead significant, sustained effort across long periods.
