Professor Steinberg is Tara’s supervisor at Cambridge University during her study-abroad program. A history professor, he is also a successful academic in his own right, and he is renowned for his work on the Holocaust. Steinberg represents for Tara a new level of education. Under his supervision, she receives special attention and challenging academic assignments. He instills in her a new appreciation for writing and communication, giving her a detailed understanding of syntax and rhetoric that brings her analytic and persuasive abilities to new heights.

Professor Steinberg also represents a divergence from Mormon influence on Tara’s education. Her prior education consisted of homeschooling under the guidance of extremely Mormon parents, and her current undergraduate education is coming from Brigham Young, a Mormon university. Although Steinberg doesn’t specifically challenge Tara’s perception of religion with his assignments, he does represent a cultural divergence from Tara’s norm. Being Jewish, English, and a professor at one of the world’s greatest academic institutions, he stands in stark contrast to Tara’s peers and teachers in the United States. Additionally, Steinberg is a source of incredible support for Tara’s journey. Recognizing her unique intelligence and great potential, he praises her work and urges her to apply for a graduate degree at Harvard or Cambridge, writing her a glowing recommendation that clinches her a competitive Cambridge scholarship.
