Duke Leto Atreides is a charismatic and generally ethical ruler, although he possesses certain qualities of cruelty and hardness due to his stressful position as the leader of his House in a very cutthroat political climate. Like many of the characters in Dune, Duke Leto is often pulled between individual wants and political responsibilities. For example, despite being devoted to Jessica, he will not marry her, as he does not want to lose the alliances of other Houses who may hope to align themselves with House Atreides through marriage.

Despite being an intelligent and strategic man, the Duke Leto is at a disadvantage in dealings with the rival Great Houses, as House Atreides lacks wealth relative to House Harkonnen and House Corrino. His family and household are aware, to some extent, that the Duke Leto may not be capable of protecting himself and his people from the Harkonnen trap that has been laid for him, but the Duke Leto has a gift of inspiring genuine loyalty in his people. They are prepared to fight and die for House Atreides.

The Duke Leto grooms his son well to take his place as Duke, training Paul to be a just, confident, and magnetic leader. However, at times, his influence on Paul seems to pale in comparison to Jessica’s influence. She has been shaping Paul since birth with Bene Gesserit teachings. These teachings have a profound effect on Paul’s success in the Fremen world of Arrakis, and his resulting rise to Emperor status. Additionally, when Gurney Halleck reunites with Paul near the end of the novel, he implies that Paul resembles his grandfather – who was said to be cruel – more than he resembles his father, who was considered to be moral and trustworthy. However, Paul does inherit the Duke Leto’s charisma and appeal, which is crucial in gaining the worshipful support of important people on Arrakis. Additionally, Paul inherits the Duke Leto’s curse of needing to balance individual desires with political duties.

Like his father before him, Paul will be unable to marry his real love, and will keep her as his concubine while he takes an official wife. Additionally, the Duke Leto bore the burden of being responsible for the lives of his entire household, which included not just his immediate family but also his important employees, servants, and military force. Similarly, Paul inherits this burden – keeping the House Atreides alive – but his household is magnified to the extreme, as he takes responsibility over all of the Fremen of Arrakis.
