Director: Jonathan Demme
Notable cast: Oprah Winfrey (Sethe), Donald Glover (Paul D), Thandie Newton (Beloved)
Jonathan Demme’s adaptation stays remarkably true to the novel, and though critics celebrated it, the three-hour film did not find commercial success at the box office. The film diverges from the book mainly in the way it focuses on Sethe’s experience in the present. As such, Baby Suggs and Cincinnati’s Black community play a less important role in the film, and the details of life at Sweet Home do not come through as clearly.
