Along with the hens and the ducks, the sheep in Animal Farm are included in the group of “stupider animals” that are unable to learn the Seven Commandments by heart. Mentioned exclusively as a collective of animals with not one sheep being given a proper name, the sheep represent the mindless masses in society. Lacking the ability to think critically, they are unable to understand the intricacies of power and politics. They constantly break out into chants of the initial party doctrine: “Four legs good, two legs bad.” When the pigs learn to walk on their hind legs, the sheep change their bleat to, “Four legs good, two legs better!” In this regard, they are positioned as the mouthpieces for Napoleon, asserting Animal Farm’s political ideology, while also prohibiting any possibility of dissension or discussion. The sheep illustrate what happens when a political party brainwashes its citizens.
