Overview

The French Revolution (1789–1799) is guide Number 8 of the 16 SparkNotes guides for studying European History. It discusses how the French people rose up against and overthrew the corrupt ancien régime of Louis XIV and his supporters, only to see it replaced by a series of short-termed, chaotic governments that were characterized by violence, internal unrest, and agitation with France’s European neighbors. This study guide is preceded by our guide for The Enlightenment (1650-1800) and followed by our Napoleonic Europe (1799-1815) guide.
