Overview

“The Man Who Was Almost a Man” is a short story by American author Richard Wright, first published as “Almos’ a Man” in Harper’s Bazaar magazine. The story follows Dave, a young Black man living in the rural South, as he navigates the complexities of race and class while working on a plantation. Dave’s desire to own a gun and the consequences of his actions after he acquires one form the central conflict of the story.
