“The Tyger” is a poem by the visionary British Romantic poet William Blake
. Frequently set to music and commonly cited as the most anthologized poem in English literature, “The Tyger” first appeared in Blake’s 1794 collection Songs of Experience—a companion to his earlier Songs of Innocence (1789). The poem features an anonymous speaker who addresses a tiger, asking a string of questions about what kind of being could have made such a fearsome creature. Though apparently focused on the tiger, the speaker is more interested in a deeper and older question about where wickedness comes from. What kind of deity could be capable of creating both good and evil?Read the free full text, a summary & analysis, an analysis of the speaker, and explanations of famous quotes from “The Tyger.”
