Overview

Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) is an Austrian philosopher known for his provocative writings on logic, language, metaphysics, and other topics that challenged fundamental aspects of the study of philosophy. Born into an atmosphere of wealth, culture, and learning in turn of the century Vienna that then gave way to world wars and economic and political tumult, Wittgenstein was a somewhat reluctant philosopher whose ideas seemed to set stir up intense discussion and debate in in spite of his unassuming nature.

This SparkNotes guide offers concise discussions of four of Wittgenstein’s works: Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921); Blue and Brown Books, which were written in 1933-1935; Philosophical Investigations (1953); and On Certainty, which is based on notes he made in the months prior to his death in 1951.

SparkNotes also offers separate, comprehensive guides to Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Blue and Brown Books, and Philosophical Investigations.
