Overview

The Unvanquished is a novel by American author William Faulkner that was first published in 1938. It is a fictional account of the Civil War and Reconstruction as experienced by Bayard Sartoris, a member of the Sartoris family who feature as main characters in Faulkner’s earlier novel, Sartoris. The Unvanquished is notable for its experimental narrative structure, which is a series of interconnected short stories, and for its exploration of themes of race, class, and gender.
