Overview

The Secret Garden, a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, was first published in 1911. It tells the story of Mary Lennox, a young girl who is sent to live with her uncle in England after her parents die in India. Mary is a spoiled and sickly child, but she begins to thrive after she discovers a hidden garden on her uncle's estate. The Secret Garden is a classic of children's literature and has been adapted numerous times for the stage and screen, including a 1993 film version starring Maggie Smith.
