Overview

The Red and the Black, published in 1830 by French author Stendhal, is a novel that follows the rise and fall of its protagonist, Julien Sorel, as he navigates the social and political landscape of early 19th-century France. The novel is a Bildungsroman, or coming-of-age story, that explores themes of ambition, love, and class struggle. It is considered one of the first examples of the psychological novel and is often cited as a seminal work of 19th-century French literature.
