Midnight’s Children is a coming-of-age novel written by Indian-born author Salman Rushdie and published in 1981. Skillfully weaving history, myth, and various story telling techniques the novel tells the story of Saleem who is born on the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, while India declares its independence. Moving between the past and the present, Midnight’s Children connects Saleem’s personal family saga with the story of a country and its people during a historic shift. Midnight’s Children won the Booker Prize in 1981.
