Overview

Mansfield Park, published in 1814, is a novel by English author Jane Austen that follows the life of Fanny Price, a young girl who is sent to live with her wealthy relatives at Mansfield Park. Fanny navigates societal expectations, love, and moral dilemmas, her grounded nature forming a contrast to the glamorous world around her. As she grapples with her feelings for her cousin Edmund, the novel explores themes of social class, morality, and the role of women in society. It is considered the more socially aware of Austen’s novels, focusing as it does on the slave trade and the roots of the British upper-crust's wealth in corruption and exploitation. It is also probably the least romantic and most pragmatic of Austen's novels.
