Overview

The King Must Die, first published in 1958, is a historical novel by British author Mary Renault that retells the myth of Theseus, the legendary king of Athens. The novel is set in ancient Greece and follows Theseus from his childhood in Troizen to his ascent to the throne of Athens. The King Must Die is the first volume in a two-part series, followed by The Bull from the Sea, which was published in 1962.
