Overview

The Chosen, published in 1967 by American author Chaim Potok, is a novel about two Jewish boys, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders, who form an unlikely friendship in 1940s Brooklyn. The novel explores themes of religious identity, the power of friendship, and the conflict between tradition and modernity. Potok, a rabbi and scholar of Jewish history, drew on his own experiences growing up in a Orthodox household in New York City to write The Chosen. The novel was adapted into a film in 1981 and a play in 1999.
