Overview

Ceremony is novel by Leslie Marmon Silko, a writer of Laguna Pueblo descent, that was first published in 1977. It tells the story of Tayo, a young World War II veteran of mixed Laguna Pueblo and white heritage, who returns to the Laguna Pueblo reservation in New Mexico after the war and struggles to recover from the psychological and spiritual wounds he has suffered. Ceremony is a complex and multilayered work that explores themes of identity, alienation, and the power of storytelling. It is considered a classic of Native American literature and has been widely studied and taught.
