Overview

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, published in 1943, is a semi-autobiographical novel by American writer Betty Smith. It follows the life of Francie Nolan, a young girl growing up in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn in the early 20th century. The narrative, told from Francie's perspective, unfolds amidst poverty and the challenges of immigrant life, emphasizing the power of education and the resilience of the human spirit. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was instantly popular, particularly with members of the U.S. military serving overseas in World War II. It was also the basis for a well-regarded film adaptation directed by Elia Kazan in 1945.
