For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway published in 1940
. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, an American volunteer in the International Brigades fighting in the Spanish Civil War, and his involvement in a mission to destroy a bridge behind enemy lines. The novel is based on Hemingway’s own experiences as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War and was inspired by his time in Spain covering the conflict for the North American Newspaper Alliance.
