Overview

One of the most critically acclaimed movies of the 1970s, the neo-noir Taxi Driver follows the mentally unstable Vietnam War veteran Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) and his slow descent into madness. The line between heroism and terrorism is blurred as his efforts to rescue a teenage prostitute named Iris (Jodie Foster) from her abusive environment are juxtaposed with his increasingly violent, self-destructive actions. Directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader, the film explores the glorification of violence, the concept of pre-determined versus self-directed fate, and the crushing weight of loneliness. Taxi Driver features Bernard Herrmann’s chilling final score and the grey-toned and gritty cinematography of Michael Chapman. It received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
